Pope Francis meets Daw Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar

Pope Francis meets Daw Aung San Suu Kyi at the Apostolic Palace on May 4, 2017 in Vatican City, Vatican. The Holy See and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, keen to promote bonds of mutual friendship, have jointly agreed to establish diplomatic relations at the level of Apostolic Nunciature, on behalf of the Holy See, and Embassy, on the part of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

The Vatican City announced this week that The Vatican and Myanmar officially established full diplomatic relations on Thursday, just after Pope Francis met with the country’s elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. This means that the Vatican will probably have much more diplomatic influence in Myanmar, which is facing international scrutiny over atrocities against the Rohingya Muslim minority.

According to the country’s cardinal, Charles Maung Bo, it’s estimated there are about 700,000 Catholics in Myanmar, or 1% of a total population of approximately 51.4 million. The majority of Myanmar’s population is Buddhist.
