I know it feels a little overwhelming right now, and you’re probably not sure where to start, what to expect, or even if it will be worth the money. What To Expect From a Personal Trainer
What should you expect to gain from personal training? That all depends on your level of commitment. Your trainer should be ready to create an individualized plan based on the goals you set together. He or she should be able to guide you through each lift and ensure you’re using the correct form and technique. Injuries are not sexy. They will show you new exercises to do that you’d probably never think of, so you certainly won’t get bored. And, my personal favorite, they do all the counting! I know, it makes me sound lazy, but in all seriousness, I hate counting my reps. Sometimes I’m too busy grunting to remember if I’m on 8 or 9. Trust me, when you’re panting like a dog and wondering how you’re possibly going to survive this strange new form of torture, who cares what number you’re on?
2. A Personal Trainer Should Know Nutrition
Your trainer should also be equipped to guide you nutritionally. They will help you learn to eat properly in order to reach your desired level of Fitness Queen-dom. What you put into your body is completely up to you. But be forewarned, if you’re paying the big bucks to work with a trainer, and going home and eating like an unattended 6-year-old, you might as well take all that cash and light it on fire. Remember, weight training + a proper diet = the sexiest, most toned body you’ve ever had.
3. Unexpected Benefits
In addition to all the great aesthetic results you’ll get, you’re also likely to find some amazing mental and emotional results too. It’s common that your personal trainer will become your new therapist. Things tend to get pretty personal when you’re working one-on-one with someone two-three days a week. A great trainer will want to know what is going on in your personal life, because it impacts your performance at the gym. If your progress has suddenly come to a halt, it is likely because of things happening outside the gym. It’s better to talk it out. After all, in our trainers we trust. Besides, when you find yourself with your legs up in the air, getting your hamstrings stretched by someone you don’t share a bedroom with, it’s best to just let go of your awkwardness and lean in. Your trainer will likely become your best, albeit paid for, friend.
4. Thinking About A Male Personal Trainer?
Speaking of having your legs up in the air, I know some of you are wondering if having a male trainer is creepy. I’m going to give this a loud and resounding, no.
I’ve had both male and female trainers, and never has it broached, “creepy.” If you land with a trainer that creeps you out, it’s probably best to go back and fish the trainer pool again. There are plenty of trainer fish in the sea.

There is a personal trainer out there for everyone. A great trainer will work with you to achieve goals, hold you accountable, and celebrate your victories along the way. Hiring my trainer is one of the best investments I’ve ever made. Don’t be afraid to shop around before choosing your guru. Be brave, come loaded with questions, don’t fear the investment, and prepare to work hard.
